A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of stealing a Range Rover before crashing it and fleeing into a river.

The soaking wet suspect was detained by police after the luxury car was involved in a collision on the A259.

Officers to reports that a car had been stolen from an address in Rattle Road, Pevensey at about 8.51pm yesterday.

They launched a search and at 9.21pm, the same vehicle was reported to have collided with at least one other car on the A259 at Exceat Bridge.

Pictures taken from the scene show a silver car with its roof cut off, with the Range Rover lying abandoned in the middle of the major road.

Shortly afterwards, a man matching the same description of the driver was reported by a member of public on the A259 at Seaford.

Officers swiftly responded and the suspect, who was soaking wet, was detained.

It is believed he had waded into the river in an attempt to escape.

A 41-year-old man from Newhaven was arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking, failing to stop after a road traffic collision and drink-driving.

He remains in police custody at this time.
