Police have criticised people who get drunk tonight in Brighton and Hove.

Officers are threatening those who do with £80 on the spot fines or a night in the cells.

A spokeswoman for Sussex Police urged those who are out on the town to act responsibly.

She said: "Thousands of residents as well as visitors to the city will be wanting a great evening out to see in the new year.

"However, some people have a tendency to drink far too much and potentially cause themselves or others harm.

"We don't mind people enjoying themselves but we ask that they don't over do it and end up having a night they'd rather not remember.

"The message is simple: Get drunk and disorderly, and it will cost you either an £80 on the spot fine or an arrest and fine.

"We will not tolerate drunkenness or anti-social behaviour in our city.

"The majority of us enjoy a night out and don't want it ruined by drunken louts.

"Taking action against binge drinking anti-social yobs who refuse to take responsibility for themselves allows the rest of us to enjoy responsible 'grown-up' drinking."

Extra officers are being deployed across the city along with trading standards, council and fire and rescue staff during the night.
