THE first signs of summer... no, there was no sound of a cuckoo from the park nor the sight of a swallow.

It was Saturday rave night, the inevitable sound of the monotonous vibrating beat of the bass from the music that comes all night from the grounds of Sussex University. It won’t be a one off, it will be the first of more to come. Depending on the weather. No good complaining as the reply always given is "they are young". Always said in a quiet tone.

I have a set of ear protectors that should help. Well almost, for they did not compensate for the vibration that was now the problem. I was not trying to dance to the music - bouncing up and down on the bed, my body was reacting to the constant beat.

Now if the song were a ballad it could have helped me to sleep. No such luck. It was dance music.

I was trying different methods to combat the sleepless night when all of a sudden it stopped and there was that deathly silence. It was 05:11 precisely. With a deep sigh I could now go to sleep and have an extended lie in... oh no...the sun was up and shinning through the widow. When light appears, I’m awake. Oh for the joy of summer and all it brings.
