On Christmas Eve I was walking down my hallway and saw a card emerging through the letterbox. I rushed out but saw no mail van, no postal worker with trolley bag, no postal worker at all.

The card said that they were unable to deliver a package which was too big for my letterbox. The bell was not rung nor the door knocker knocked. There were four or us downstairs at that time.

By contrast, I had a wonderful, helpful service at the post office counter in WH Smiths in Churchill Square the same day, despite the staff member who served me and her colleagues having worked under stress for several days.

I was most impressed.
