FOOTBALL games on the Brighton Marina Big Screen have been called off.

A spokeswoman for the event said today the "excitement" of the football meant it was difficult for all social distancing measures to be adhered to.

Last night residents were been promised that no more games would be shown on its Big Screen after concerns about Sunday’s England game.

The giant screen welcomed hundreds of fans this weekend to watch the team’s opening game against Croatia.

It was the first game to be shown on the big screen.

Brighton Marina announced today: "It is with great sadness that we have taken the decision to cancel the screening of the Euros at Brighton Marina.

"We ensured that the appropriate safety measures and restrictions were put in place to adhere to Government regulations for Covid and social distancing, but it seems the excitement of being able to watch live football meant that it was very difficult for all measures to be adhered to during the screenings.

"Public safety is paramount to us, and in light of the recent extension of Government regulations to July 19, we have made the tough decision to cancel further screenings of live football with immediate effect.

"We are actively looking into alternative entertainment we can bring to our residents and visitors with the big screen this summer and details will be circulated as soon as we can share any updates."

Gates were set up at the entrance to the game on Sunday to control the number of people entering the event.

Brighton Marina had previously announced that the venue was “operating at 50 per cent capacity”.

Cans and bottles were thrown in the crowd during the game. Some fans stayed behind to clear up the rubbish and glass.

The marina was due to show all the matches, not just the England games.

After the game on Sunday, Brighton Marina said that “due to unforeseen circumstances”, no more games were taking place that day.

A spokesman announced yesterday morning that all games had been cancelled for Monday also.

In a statement to residents of Brighton Marina last night, Premier Marinas, which oversees the boatyard and moorings at the Marina, said: “We’d like to advise that we have raised our concerns earlier to Brighton Marina Estates regarding the lack of controls in place for Saturdays (sic) football screening.

“Premier Marinas does not control this part of the marina complex.

“We have been advised that no further football matches will be screened."
