I was saddened when I read through the reviews of the year. There were honours for Michael Parkinson, credit for BBC journalist Alan Johnston, both much deserved, but no mention of my favourite news story of the year.

Pub landlord Charlie Powell deserves to be knighted for his actions in banning the carol-singing councillors from his pub, near Battle (The Argus, December 28).

Deftly this dealt a blow to two of my bugbears. The anti-smoking brigade who have put paid to the simple pleasures of a pint and a pipe, and the pointless pontificating of local councils.

Well done Charlie - hero of the year.
