A POP musical exploring female issues with the patriarchy is being performed in Brighton.

Sitting Pretty, a four-person cabaret self-described as having an "edge of pain and a heap of heart", is underway for the Brighton Fringe at the Rialto Theatre in Dyke Road.

The show will focus on subjects including Britney Spears and mother-daughter relationships.

Audience members are encouraged to wear 90s fancy dress in keeping with the play's nostalgic feel.

She said: "We have drag kings and queens, as well as a completely gender-fluid team. Brighton is the perfect place to have these conversations as it is such an LGBT community.

"We are an all female writing and producing team with LGBT and non-binary voices in the cast and crew.

"Idriss is playing female for the show. He is a fantastic, young gay, black actor, although he does not identify as female.

"I think Brighton is ahead of the country in a lot of ways, so it is good to try things out here.

The play's director is Karoline Gable. The cast comprises Katrina, Idriss Kargbo, who has starred in Five Guys Named Moe, Genevieve Nicole, who has a theatre credit for Chicago and composer Miracle Chance, who starred in the Rocky Horror Show.

The show also stars Lizzy Connelly, who has previously directed Cinderella: A Socially Distant Ball at the Turbine Theatre in Nine Elms, London. Lizzy is also currently helping film a new BBC studios drama.

Lizzy said: "We really want to explore lots of female issues that we have been brought up with for our whole lives, it feels like a bit of a trip.

"We want to hear a variety of voices, and the show is helping to process ourselves and our identity.

"Without spoiling it is almost surprise sad, we want to trick the audience into thinking it is a panto, when actually it is a heartfelt conversation."

The final shows will be tonight, June 16, at 6.30pm; and 9.30pm. Tickets will for the show will cost £15 each.
