The road closure caused long delays for motorists, as some HGVs got stuck in nearby country lanes while avoiding the accident.

Anyone with dashcam footage of the incident is being urged by police to come forward.

The spokesman added: "Police are urging anyone who saw what happened – or anyone with relevant dashcam footage – to email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting Operation Craven.

"We'd also like to thank the public for their patience and understanding."
