Laura King (Argus letters) encourages residents to attend a protest at the town hall in defence of car culture and against the Green-led council's plans to reduce car use.

The council is democratically elected. Following the failure of the Labour group and the loss of several of their councillors, the party with the most elected councillors took over.

Central Brighton becoming a car-free city would be a dream come true. It can’t come quickly enough.

One hundred and 75 deaths locally and 36,000 nationally directly from air pollution speak for themselves, car emissions contribute overwhelmingly to the problem which is not only a public health scandal but a considerable burden for our NHS.

On top of that there are a vast number of deaths and casualties caused by careless driving every year.

Giving the city road space back to pedestrians and taking them off cramped congested pavements is a winner.

Compromise will be needed of course, deliveries, the less able, business and emergency vehicles will undoubtedly be considered and accounted for.

I urge the council to be brave and make the right decisions on transport on behalf of our residents, particularly the less well off who are statistically more affected by air pollution.

Ban all but essential use of cars from our city centre as soon as it is practical to do so.
