A MAN has been charged with the murder of a Metropolitan Police Sergeant.
Sergeant Matt Ratana died from a gunshot wound to the chest hours after he was shot by a handcuffed suspect at Croydon Custody Centre on September 25 last year.
The 54-year-old rugby coach from Goring was taken to St George's Hospital in Tooting but he was pronounced dead at 4.20am.
An inquest heard the weapon was discharged "several times".
Homicide detectives investigating the fatal shooting have today charged Louis de Zoysa, 23, of Park Road in Banstead, Surrey, with his murder, as well as possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition.
De Zoysa has remained in hospital in a stable, non-life threatening condition since the incident, under police guard.
Officers have been in close liaison with his medical team and the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) throughout.
Recent changes to his condition and a decision by the CPS has resulted in de Zoysa being charged with murder and the other offences this afternoon.
He will appear in custody at Westminster Magistrates’ Court tomorrow via video link.
The Met said Matt’s partner and son have been informed.
