A DRUNK driver who was stopped by police started spitting at officers while she was arrested.

Police pulled over a car with a flat tyre that was "being driven on its rims" in Shoreham last night.

They spoke to the woman behind the wheel and started to suspect that she was drunk.

When they arrested her for being over the limit, the woman then spat at them in anger.

She is now in custody for both drink driving and assaulting police.

Sussex Roads Police shared a picture of the woman's car on social media.

Writing on Twitter, officers said: "We found this vehicle being driven on its rims in Shoreham this evening.

"We stopped to have a chat, and the driver was intoxicated.

"After she was arrested, she decided to spit at us.

"One in custody, drink drive and assault PC."

The arrest of the women is part of Operation Dragonfly, a crackdown on drink and drug drivers in Sussex and Surrey.

Road policing officers are on dedicated patrols looking for people that break traffic laws.

Last year, the maximum sentence for people convicted of assaulting emergency workers - such as the police - was doubled.

The new sentencing laws have increased the maximum penalty for violent attacks to two years.

This applies to attacks on police, prison and custody officers, ambulance staff, NHS workers, rescuers and firefighters.
