Brighton's first summer signing Enok Mwepu will be hoping his ex-Premier League striker agent will help to have a very bright future.

The 23-year-old Zambian international, who signed a four-year deal with the Seagulls after joining from Austrian giants Red Bull Salzburg yesterday, receives guidance from his agent former Tottenham and West Ham striker Freddie Kanoute.

But Chaka Simbeye, who is a Zambian sports journalist, believes the midfielder has a bright future ahead of him.

He told The Argus: “He has a very bright future. One thing that makes Enock a really interesting player is the humility that he has.

“When he was in Zambia, him and Patson (Daka) participated in community events with their friends as well as helping their families.

“That included helping to organise a game to raise money in memory of their former teammate, Changwe Kalale, who passed away in 2017 after being involved in a road accident.

“They were both incredibly close to him.

“Enock comes from a football family as his brother is a striker who plays in Austria.

“There was a story circulating on social media of someone meeting them at the airport and not knowing it was them due to how casual and down to earth they were before realizing later.

“His humility, his drive as well as guidance from his agent, former Sevilla and Tottenham striker, Frederic (Freddie) Kanoute will see him progress well at Brighton.

“He has a few intangibles to match his natural talent.

Mwepu becomes the second Zambian and Salzburg player to join the Premier League after his former teammate Patson Daka signed for Leicester earlier this month and Simbeye admits that Zambian fans are over the moon to have two players playing in the Prem.

He said: “Zambian fans are so excited to have two players in the Premier League as most people will migrate from the teams, they normally support in the top four to supporting Brighton and Leicester while watching every game.

“Brighton have already got a glimpse of it with Percy Tau but the interest level will rise and I expect to see more Leicester and Brighton shirts around the country.

“Tau will especially be important because Southern African Nations tend to support each other’s players as with Tau and Mwepu on the same team, South African, Zambian, and Zimbabwean fans will have a vested interest in Brighton.

“The Zambian national team is in a period of transition with Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic as head coach as they have experienced a lull since winning the African Cup of Nations in 2012, not qualifying for the tournament since as this could be a welcomed boost for interest in players in the country with World Cup qualifiers on the horizon.”

Mwepu is nicknamed ‘The Computer’ and Simbeye revealed how that came about.

He said: “The Computer nickname came from the fans here in Zambia while he was playing at youth level because of his reading of the game, his penchant for creative passes and through balls as it was a nickname that encapsulated his game as an intelligent player.”

Simbeye also explained how popular Mwepu is in Zambia.

He said: “He is rated very highly in Zambia as he is ‘one of our own’,.

“He came through the academy at Kafue Celtics and played in the Zambian Super League at Napsa Stars while also being a star player at youth level.

“The U20 African Cup of Nations was held in Zambia in 2017 as a Zambian team with Enock starting won the tournament as 60,000 people were going to the games to fill up the National Stadium in Lusaka.

“They also got to the knockout phase of the U20 World Cup and that is how Enock made his move to Salzburg, about a month after the tournament.

“Zambia is a football country with a particular fascination in the Premier League as when Enock Mwepu and Patson Daka played at Salzburg, majority of their Facebook and Twitter interactions were with Zambian fans.

“They are also key players with the National Team while playing Champions League football has increased their rating here in Zambia.”

He could also play alongside a fellow African player in Yves Bissouma at Albion this season and that is a prospect that excites many.

Simbeye said: “Mwepu and Bissouma playing together would be exciting as teams with African players have always gained interest.

“For instance, some of the Portsmouth teams under Harry Redknapp with Papa Bouba Diop and Sulley Muntari or Chelsea with Michael Essien and Didier Drogba as Samsung had billboards and adverts with the latter in our country.

“Stylistically, playing with Bissouma would be similar to some of the midfield partners that Mwepu had at Salzburg while having another African player will help him to settle in at Brighton.”
