A VACCINATION service that was forced to close by protesters is expected to return as planned.

Brighton and Hove City Council have confirmed that the mobile vaccination bus will return to Hove Lawns this weekend.

On Saturday, the bus was forced to postpone services and leave the lawns after being targeted by anti-lockdown demonstrators.

The vaccine bus did not return to the lawns on Sunday.

Dr Hannah Davies, medical director for the Sussex Covid-19 vaccination programme, said: “Abuse of NHS staff, who have worked tirelessly over the last seven months in order to protect their patients and communities by delivering life-saving Covid-19 vaccines, is completely unacceptable.

“We remain absolutely committed to ensuring that every adult across Brighton and Hove is able to receive their Covid-19 vaccination safely.

"We are continuing to offer walk-in sessions with our mobile teams at key locations across the city, at Brighton Racecourse vaccination centre, and from today the Brighton Centre is also open for walk in vaccinations every day this week.

“We urge any adult who hasn't yet come forward to receive their vaccination to do so at their earliest opportunity.”

Piers Corbyn, brother of former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, took part in the Brighton demonstration on Saturday afternoon.

He could be seen leading a chorus of shouts directed at the bus.

He said: "Clear off you scum, clear off you disgusting specimens of humanity, clear off, go home."

Councillor Phelim Mac Cafferty, leader of the Council, said: "As we have rising cases, it is incredibly disappointing to see the irresponsible actions of a few putting in danger the many.

"We reaffirm our city's need to keep our population safe, and we won't be deterred from our important vaccination programme by the acts of cowards spreading misinformation.

"We encourage everyone to take up both vaccinations at the earliest point they can.

"Our proud tradition as a city is that we work against adversity, and we won't be deterred from fighting the pandemic together."

Brighton Racecourse vaccination centre remained open on Saturday and Sunday for people who wanted to get their first or second jab.

There is also walk-in services every day this week, including at the Brighton Centre every day starting from 8.30am on today.
