FACE masks are set to be reintroduced for pupils and staff in Brighton and Hove from tomorrow.

The move is among a number of measures being introduced to curb rising Covid rates in the city.

Brighton and Hove City Council say cases have “increased rapidly” in school aged children and, as a result, is advising all secondary schools and colleges to reintroduce face coverings in classrooms and communal areas for staff and pupils.

A council spokesman said: We know that some education providers have moved towards the partial reintroduction of face coverings already and we thank you for your support to help minimise the risk of transmission at this time.”

Exemptions will remain in place, including for children with additional needs and where the wearing of a face covering directly impacts on the ability to deliver education.

Pupils and their families are also being encouraged to take lateral flow tests at home, two times a week and report the results.

The council has said this should continue over the summer holidays.

The announcement is part of series of measures supported by the government to help tackle a rise in case of the Delta variant of coronavirus.

The city council said the extra support would be provided to boost testing and ensure the city is “safe and open for business”.

It will include the operation of two symptom free walk-in PCR Mobile Testing Units and the introduction of advertising campaign to promote testing and vaccinations, aimed at the highest risk groups.
