AN ARGUS letter writer discovered that when he attended a service at the city's war memorial held in remembrance of the men of the Royal Sussex

Regiment who lost their lives during the Battle of Boar's Head in 1916, it was covered in green algae, no attempt having been made by Brighton and Hove City Council to clean it up for this very special and sombre occasion.

Clearly it has learnt absolutely nothing over the past three years because, when a plaque was unveiled there in 2018 in memory of Lieutenant Ernest Beal

VC, it took exactly the same attitude, ie it did absolutely nothing to make the memorial presentable, the base of which was besmirched with moss, lichen and other undergrowth. Just half an hour or so with a pressure washer would have made all the difference but it was not to be.

Perhaps somebody reading this letter can write in and explain why the city's councillors continue to show no respect for our Armed Forces because John

Marchant, the writer of the letter and I, both being Armed Forces veterans, remain baffled by their apparent "couldn't care less" attitude towards those who gave their all in service to this country.
