With reference to the letter from Simon Burgess about the campaign for humane treatment of chickens (Letters, January 3), people who really care about animals do not eat them and do not endorse the exploitation of them, something that rearing them for their "meat" undeniably is.

While this attempt to improve conditions for chickens is commendable it simply doesn't go far enough.

Why not campaign for better conditions for pregnant sows who have to endure months in metal stalls or cows who have to endure unnaturally heavy udders and excessive milking. All animals deserve the same amount of respect.
