BRIGHTON and Hove is among the worst places to live as a graduate, according to a recent report.

The study by comparethemarket.com placed the city third worst on the list, behind only Westminster and Bath, with a graduate satisfaction score of only 37.5 per cent.

At the opposite end of the scale, Bradford, Carlisle and Preston placed in the top three for graduate satisfaction.

Their data found that graduates in the city spend almost 60 per cent of their average wage on rent and utility bills at a cost of roughly £1,200 per month.

For those commuting to and from work in the city, transport costs were among the most expensive among those studied, at an average of £80 a month.

Unfortunately, getting a pint at the pub will set residents back 50 per cent more than it would in Bradford, and a gym membership also costs Brighton-based graduates 25 per cent more than their peers in the Yorkshire town.

Despite its poor placement, however, Brighton does offer more job opportunities after graduation, boasting more than cities in the top 10, including Newcastle, Leicester, Stoke-on-Trent and Carlisle.

The average salary earned by graduates living in the city was also higher than some placing in the top 10, although rent for a one bed property in the city centre was more than double the price than in Stoke-on-Trent, costing on average £974 per month.

Chris King, head of home insurance at comparethemarket.com, said: “No matter where you choose to set up home after graduation, there are a lot of important factors to consider.

“If you find yourself in a position to purchase after university, it is important to get both your home and your contents insured, and if you’re renting, it is sensible to consider contents insurance too.”
