BEACHGOERS have been warned to watch out for quicksand at a popular beach.
Visitors to Shoreham Beach are being urged to be wary of soft sand at the water's edge caused by fast-flowing tides.
Officials confirmed that they had received a report of the sand at the Beach Road section of the coast below the high water mark on Thursday night.
Quicksand usually consists of sand or clay and salt that's become waterlogged.
Objects – or people – can become partially submerged and unable to escape.
Anyone who spots the sand is asked to contact Adur and Worthing Council’s Coastal Office.
A spokesman said: "Quicksand can quickly form and then disappear if the conditions are right and a report has been received of such conditions briefly at the Beach Road section of the coast below the high water mark on Thursday night.
"If anyone experiences such conditions they are asked to contact Adur & Worthing Council’s Coastal Office on 01903 238977 or the Coast Guard 999 after 17:00."
