Adur and Worthing Council to install £34k bins on seafront

A total of 47 bins are being put in place on Worthing seafront from the east end of Splash Point to Heene Road.

The decision has been made by Adur and Worthing Council as it ups its efforts to tidy the area.

The bins will be able to hold a much larger amount of waste than those they are replacing - increasing the litter capacity by almost 9,000 litres.

Two of the bins are for recycling and will add to the six double metal recycling bins that were installed last month on the promenade, taking the overall total to 53.

While the majority of the old bins which have been removed were able to take 90 litres of litter each, the new ones can take 240 litres.

A total of 27 black bins have been installed so far, with the rest due to be put in place over the coming weeks.

More than 30 small black bins were removed, ready to be replaced by the new ones.

Councillor Edward Crouch, Worthing's executive member for digital and environmental services, said: "Our old bins served the town well, but many were past their best and too small for the footfall Worthing now enjoys.

"We have added 8,880 litres of extra capacity between Splash Point and Heene Road and hope that this will help reduce waste being left next to bins that have become full.

"By investing in these larger capacity, modern bins, we can help tackle the issues associated with littering in our town while providing 'bin-infrastructure' that is fit for the future.

"This ensures our key promenade area stays clean and tidy on even the busiest of bank holiday weekends.

"Our bins are emptied up to seven times per day during the peak season, and I pay tribute to our hard-working waste crews keeping our town clean and tidy."

The new bins cost the council just over £34,000.

The six which were installed in July were transformed from regular recycling bins into wrapped recycling bins, given a new look, and can hold up to 480 litres of litter each.

If they work well, opportunities to extend recycling along the seafront will be reviewed.
