A SEARCH is underway to find a man in his sixties believed to be missing at sea after going for a swim.

Emergency services including coastguard crews are searching for a man who was reported missing after entering the sea off the beach at Tide Mills, Mill Lane, Seaford yesterday.

At 2.10pm on Tuesday, police received a report that about 40 minutes earlier the man had entered the sea and has not been seen since.

His clothing had been left on the beach and he entered the sea wearing swimming shorts.

A search by emergency services including the coastguard and RNLI took place into Tuesday evening and resumed on Wednesday morning, but he has not yet been found.

The man is said to be in his sixties and from East Sussex, and police are liaising with his family.

His identity is not being disclosed at this time, police said.

The disappearance is not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesman from Sussex Police said: "At 2.10pm on Tuesday 31 August police received a report that about 40 minutes earlier a man had been seen to enter the sea off the beach at Tide Mills, Mill Lane, Seaford, and had not been seen since.

"His clothing had been left on the beach and he entered the sea wearing swimming shorts.

"A search by emergency services including Coastguard and RNLI took place into Tuesday evening and resumed on Wednesday morning, but he has not yet been found."

Pictures taken from the scene show services scanning the coastline in search of the missing swimmer yesterday evening.

A coastguard helicopter was also tasked to join the search, which continued past 6pm.

A spokesman for RNLI Newhaven Lifeboat Station said at the time: "A joint operation is currently taking place following a report of a missing person in the area."
