RESIDENTS have only two weeks left to submit their thoughts on the proposed expansion of the Rampion offshore wind farm.

Dubbed ‘Rampion 2’, the proposal could see the number of wind turbines eight miles off the Sussex coast double with up to an extra 116. However, the new turbines could create up to three times the amount of power using the latest technology.

If approved, the project could power over one million homes across the UK and reduce carbon emissions by 1.8 million tonnes per year.

Chris Tomlinson, development and stakeholder manager of the project for renewable energy firm RWE, said the consultation website has attracted over 5,500 views since the consultation started, and have reached out to a variety of different groups to gauge their views.

He said: “We have held public forums, meetings with dozens of local parish councils, MPs, interest groups and specialists to try and identify all the issues that should be considered in our designs.

“We have received a huge amount of feedback from people who understand the importance of creating clean, renewable energy in the face of climate change, as well as a lot of important information that will help shape the project to mitigate its impact on local communities."

The Rampion 2 proposal is the only one of its kind off the south coast, where much of the UK’s energy demand is.

Final plans for the expansion will be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate for examination in early 2022, with construction beginning around 2025-2026 and in operation before the end of the decade.

People wishing to express their views have until September 16 to do so, and can submit their thoughts on the expansion at Rampion2.com.
