The sizeable rock landed in the aisle as the bus passed by Southlands Hospital in Shoreham and “narrowly missed” passengers.

Jackson told The Argus: “It was a close miss. The rock went straight by me – it was crazy.

“I don’t know if it was travelling fast enough but it could have easily caused some damage or at least a nasty gash.

“I managed to get away with just a tiny cut on my finger – it was more the shock of it. Luckily the bus wasn’t very busy.”

Photos taken by Jackson showed the extent of the damage caused by the impact of the rock which left a large hole in the window.

Brighton and Hove Buses, who were running the service, said the driver stopped the bus "immediately" to check all passengers were safe.

"Our rapid response team who arrived at the scene straight away,” a spokeswoman said.

"Passengers transferred onto another bus to continue their onward journey."

Sussex Police said they were aware of the incident.

“Damage was caused to the windscreen of the vehicle as it passed Southlands Hospital in Hammy Lane,” a police spokesman said.
