A FRENCH-speaking community group is reuniting in time for its 50th anniversary.

The Mid-Sussex Franco-British Society met every month for the past 50 years in Haywards Heath until things abruptly stopped because of the Covid pandemic.

The group, which has some  30 members, decided to continue with its informal meetings, which involve conversations in French with a variety of historical topics and guest speakers.

Barbara Stevens, secretary, said all are welcome to the group, regardless of their French speaking ability.

She said: “Usually, I get the different speakers to illustrate their talks, so people whose French is not so good, they can understand it more.

“We like to encourage people to come and we’re very considerate. It’s surprising, if they come regularly how much progress people make just by hearing the language and seeing pictures, you begin to understand more.”

There will be talks about the Channel Tunnel, the British in the South of France in the 19th and 20th centuries, events in France 1885-1900, an evening of French songs and a variety of other topics.

Membership costs £20 for the year, while visitors pay £5 per session and students pay £2.
