A TEAM of young athletes from Worthing have struck gold in the biggest dance competition in the world.

Pupils from Glendale Theatre Arts competed against 120,000 competitors from 62 different countries in the dance world cup.

A team of 30 youngsters, aged between 12 and 21, represented England at the event in Telford, winning three gold medals, four silver and three bronze.

Leila Grannell, Harvey Pearce and Lisa Bird with Jessie Popkeiwicz-Smith won the three golds for the team.

Glendale have won gold at every dance world cup they have entered, as well having items elected for the gala showcase in every year they have participated.

Mandy Chapman, the school’s principal, said: “I am so proud of the whole team, auditioning and being selected to dance for England is a huge honour and the whole team have been amazing.

“It has been such a challenging time for all of the dance schools and dance teachers, with a lot of the training taking place online, so it has been a huge achievement for us all to pull this together.

“Students who also achieve academic success as well as creative arts successes prove you don’t have to ‘choose’ between after school activities and academics.”
