A WOMAN has died after being hit by a car on the Old Shoreham Road.

Emergency services including police and ambulance crews were called to the scene on the A270 in Southwick at around 9pm, following reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian.

The pedestrian, a woman in her 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pictures taken from the road, which is used by hundreds of motorists every day, show the scale of the response, as police tape cordoned off a section of the road.

An officer manned the cordon while emergency services worked to investigate the incident.

The road is understood to have been reopened and traffic has returned to usual levels.

A spokesman from Sussex Police said: "Police were called to Old Shoreham Road, Southwick, at around 9pm on Thursday to reports of a collision between a car and a pedestrian.
