WATER bottles left over from the marathon are set to be given out to schools and running clubs in the city.

There were concerns over what would happen to unused bottles of water following Brighton Marathon on Sunday.

However, the team behind the event confirmed they are now being repurposed and redistributed.

Grounded Events confirmed they are being collected and will be offered to running clubs in the community and schools in the city.

The scheme, which is already proving popular, will prevent plastic from heading to landfill unnecessarily.

Nicola Smith, operations manager for Grounded Events, said: "We are delighted to be able to offer local running clubs and schools the opportunity to repurpose the surplus of reusable water bottles after the event this year.

"So far, the uptake has been fantastic, with running clubs such as Hove Hornets and Phoenix coming forwards, as well as Hove Park and Blatchington Mill schools."

She added that the introduction of stand-pipes and reusable drinks bottles for all finishers of the race, volunteers and the event team, has been an important part of their sustainability efforts, helping to reduce the amount of single-use plastic at the marathon.
