A MAN has been jailed for 12 years after a “vicious” sex attack on a young woman who was walking home.

Anthony Uwakwe-Nwagwu sexually assaulted his victim in an alley between Boxall Walk and Goring’s Mead in Horsham at 2.30am on September 12, 2020.

The 21-year-old was was walking through the alley, off Brighton Road, when she was attacked from behind and sexually assaulted.

She suffered cuts and bruises as she struggled with her attacker before her shouts and screams alerted residents to what was going on.

Uwakwe-Nwagwu fled the scene but was arrested nearby.

Police said his DNA was found on the victim's clothing and CCTV showing him following her to the scene were vital factors in his subsequent conviction.

The 22-year-old chef, from Bishopric in Horsham, was convicted of sexual assault by penetration in June after a trial.

He was sentenced to 12-years in prison at Hove Crown Court on September 16.

His victim, who is entitled to anonymity, has since been supported by specially trained officers.

Detective Constable Della Squires, of the West Sussex safeguarding investigations unit, said: "This was an isolated incident, but a very frightening experience for the victim.

“Uwakwe-Nwagwu spotted her in the street and followed her to the place where he viciously attacked her.

“Fortunately, her brave struggles alerted neighbours and ensured that police were informed at once, enabling a search of the area which quickly traced him."
