A MAN has been charged with arson following a “major” house fire.
The incident occurred in Shaftesbury Avenue in Brighton at 4.10pm on Monday, May 24.
Officers were first called to the scene due to concerns for the welfare of a man.
Upon arrival, a fire was discovered at the property and nearby residents were evacuated from their homes to safety.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service attended and dealt with the blaze.
The fire was treated as deliberate.
Following an investigation, a 50-year-old man from Brighton was arrested around a week later.
He has now been charged with arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered, possession of cocaine and assaulting an emergency worker.
The man has since been released on bail and ordered to appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, October 14.
