A NEW cycling café says a member of the public who helped stop an attempted break-in is welcome to claim a free coffee and cake.
Proper Cycling & Coffee in Uckfield’s High Street was targeted by thieves at about 10.05pm on Thursday, September 23.
The cycling café, which opened in July, is appealing for information from the public regarding the attempted break-in.
A café spokeswoman said two masked people “severely damaged” the front of the shop in an attempt to gain entry.
Photos of the scene show a number of windows have been smashed.
“Thankfully our security systems are brand new and one of the best available,” she said.
The Proper Cycling & Coffee spokeswoman said a man who was passing by “chased off” the offenders.
“Free coffee and cake on us for him,” she said. “But as a new business in Uckfield, it’s not the best start.
“But it’s good to know that there is a community willing to step up and help out when it’s needed.
“We’ve only been there a few months so it’s a shame after so much work. Luckily our security is brand new and high spec but it’s still an expensive repair.”
The spokeswoman also thanked the local police for their swift response and help with cleaning up.
“Any information regarding the identity of the thieves would be much appreciated by both ourselves and Sussex Police,” she added.
Proper Cycling & Coffee also has a site in Keymer Road in Hassocks.
