As a result of the incident, police have increased patrols in the area around First Avenue in Hove while the investigation is ongoing.

Brighton and Hove’s Divisional Commander Chief Superintendent Justin Burtenshaw reassured the public that there is “no threat to the wider community”.

“I fully understand the sense of concern in the community following Sunday’s incident, but I would like to reassure residents that this was an isolated incident, with no links to terrorism, that poses no wider risk,” he said.

“Reports of firearms incidents rightly justify a robust police response and our officers acted swiftly to contain the area around First Avenue and make a prompt arrest.

“We have increased our patrols around the area to reassure the public and provide a visible presence.”
