THE EARLY autumn sunshine is set to end abruptly as wet and windy conditions sweep across the county.

The Met Office is predicting this week will see the start of autumnal weather.

This morning, people in Sussex woke up to heavy rain and strong winds following a weekend of sunshine and unseasonably high temperatures.

But Nicky Maxey, from the Met Office says a cold front moving in from Northern Ireland and Scotland will bring with it unsettled conditions.

She said: “The cold front will bring some potentially heavy rain.

“There’s still some sunshine scattered round on Monday but we could see heavier showers.

“Hail and thunder are also a risk to the North and West, so Monday heralds a real change towards the autumnal-style weather.”

In today’s outlook, further showers are expected, and temperatures could drop to around 7 C.

We can expect to see more rain tomorrow, with strong winds making it feel much cooler compared with recent days.

Temperatures will reach a maximum of 16 C.

The rest of the week is also set to be windy and further rain and showers will spread across Sussex on Thursday and Friday.

There will be some brightness at times, but temperatures look set to be near or slightly below average.

Here's the Met Office forecast, which may be subject to change:

Tonight:

A breezy night with clear spells and further showers. These mainly affecting western areas and Channel coasts. Clouding over later with showery rain arriving to some parts. Minimum temperature 7 °C.

Tuesday:

A cloudy morning with showers or longer spells of rain reaching all areas through Tuesday. A rather windy day and continuing to feel much cooler compared to recent days. Maximum temperature 16 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Windy on Wednesday with some sunshine. Further rain and showers spreading eastwards Thursday and Friday with some brightness at times. Temperatures near or slightly below average.
