A CABLE laying ship has been spotted off the coast in Brighton this afternoon, but it is not involved with Rampion wind farms.
The ship, named IT Intrepid, set off from Southampton yesterday evening at 8.24pm and is now confirmed to be anchored off the coast of Brighton due to choppy seas.
The 86-man ship is a fully furnished cable ship which is capable of installation and maintenance activities in all ocean depths.
Her immediate responsibility is to be on “cable repair and maintenance stand-by for the Sentinel Maintenance program”.
The program is for fibre optic and power cables on the seabed that need repairing. IT Intrepid can inspect cables down to 2,600 metres.
The 115 metre ship’s home port is Bridgetown in Barbados, and the ship was built in 1989.
An RNLI lifeboat was also spotted in the area but is now confirmed to not be involved.
