ONE hundred bike sheds are to be installed across the city.

Brighton and Hove City Council has announced it is in the early stages of planning where they should be placed.

It has allocated £500,000 of funding for 100 cycle hangars which will provide secure storage for cyclists, many of who cannot fit their bikes inside their homes.

The plans will involve an online survey which will be launched shortly to “assess demand for secure on-street cycle parking that will be solely reserved for residents”.

A council spokesman said: “At our budget council in February, £500,000 of funding was allocated to buying, installing, managing and maintaining 100 cycle hangars.

“We’re now in the early stages of planning where they should be installed.

“We will be launching an online survey very soon designed to assess demand for secure on-street cycle parking that will be solely reserved for residents.

“At this stage, we are not asking people to apply for a space, this will come later.

“Assessments will be made by considering factors such as the suitability of sites, current facilities in the area, levels of reported bike thefts and the level of demand.”

The announcement comes after a resident told The Argus his idea of renting a parking space to install a bike hangar as a pilot scheme was blocked by the council due to “certain legalities”.

Last year, more than 100 people signed a petition for a bike shed to be installed in Seven Dials as a pilot, with a view to extend over the whole city.

A bike hangar was installed in Shaftesbury Road, Brighton, near London Road railway station ten years ago.

The council’s bike hangar idea is likely to be similar to those which are proving popular in London.

In south west London, Wandsworth Council allowed people to fill in an online form to request a bike hangar in their street for “residents who own bicycles but struggle to store them inside their homes”. The hangars would be installed based on local demand and if the location was suitable.

Council-owned bike sheds in Wandsworth cost £72 a year, providing an inexpensive way of people with limited space to store their bikes.
