A “BOMB scare” has been declared over after a suspicious device was blown up at a holiday park.

Butlin's Bognor Regis Resort in Upper Bognor Road was evacuated at 7.15am on Tuesday, October 5, after the device was found in the car park.

The army bomb squad were called to deal with the suspect package, according to police.

A controlled explosion was carried out by experts at about 11.50am.

"The device was disrupted to allow the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit to make an assessment,” a police spokeswoman said.

“It was found to not be an explosive device and presented no risk to the public.”

Holidaymakers and Butlin’s staff have since been allowed back into the resort.

"Our thanks to members of the public and staff at the site for their patience while we ensured it was safe,” the police spokeswoman added.

A Butlin’s spokeswoman said: “We worked closely with the emergency services and would like to thank them for their support.

"The safety and security of our guests and team members is our number one priority and we thank everyone for their patience this morning.”

An earlier police statement said officers were called to the scene to assist with an evacuation of guests at the hotel as a “precautionary measure”

Road blocks and cordons were also put in place.
