BINS are starting to overflow around the city as refuse workers continue to strike.

People in Hove are starting to feel the impact of the strike by Cityclean binmen, which is planned to last for two weeks.

The strike began on Tuesday, October 5, after 100 per cent of GMB Union members voted in favour of the walkout in Brighton.

It was prompted by a dispute over pay and working conditions.

A spokesman for the GMB Union said: "Our members today at a meeting in Brighton and Hove refuse and recycling and commercial waste service have decided to continue with their industrial action as there are no new proposals from the council."

Pictures taken this morning show communal bins in Hove are starting to overflow, with no collections to remove people's waste.

People have started to leave their rubbish next to bins as they cannot fit anymore bags into the bins themselves.

In one case, there was so much excess waste that it has almost spilt into a bike lane in The Drive, Hove.

Elsewhere on The Drive, one bin was filled with so much rubbish that the lid broke off and was left lying next to the bin.

In Wilbury Grove some communal bins are so full that people have had to stack their rubbish onto the pavement.

A spokesman for Brighton and Hove City Council said: "We apologise to residents for the disruption.

"Residents can get rid of their household waste and recycling at our household waste recycling sites, which are open throughout the strike.

"Our advice to residents during this time is wherever possible please flatten boxes, try to minimise waste and rinse and store recycling safely at home."
