ONE of the oldest working cars in the UK is set to hit the road again after recent restoration work.
The 1903 Type L Darracq is due to take part in the 2021 London to Brighton Veteran Car Run next month.
The car is among the attractions at the Haynes Motor Museum in Sparkford, Somerset.
The 118-year-old motor vehicle has recently been restored – making it one of the oldest working cars in the UK.
A Haynes Motor Museum spokesman said the car has been wheeled out in preparation for the special event next month.
"The car will be put through her paces outside the museum before she takes part in the 125th anniversary of the London-Brighton Veteran Car Run,” he said.
"For visitors, it’s a rare opportunity to take photos, see how a 100-year-old car works and meet some of the restoration team who look after her."
Due to take place on November 7, the 2021 London to Brighton Veteran Car Run will this year be celebrating its 125th anniversary.
The annual car run, which was cancelled in 2020 due to Covid-19 lockdown, is open to vehicles built before 1905.
The 60-mile journey will take drivers from Hyde Park in London to a halfway stop in Crawley before crossing through the South Downs to Madeira Drive on the Brighton seafront.
The Royal Automobile Club says it intends for this year to be a major celebration event with up to 500 participants expected.
Ben Cussons, chairman of the Royal Automobile Club, said: “There is no motoring event anywhere on Earth to rival the incredible history and charisma of the RM Sotheby’s London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, and this year’s 125th commemoration will be the most special since the Centenary Run back in 1996.
“Not only do we have another major milestone to honour but there is also so much pent-up enthusiasm – from both participants and huge numbers of well-wishers who always line the roads – to see veteran cars back on the hallowed route to Madeira Drive.”
