RESIDENTS in some areas are being urged to get involved in a new project that could see small parks in our streets and more roads closed off.

People living in Hanover and Tarner are being invited to get involved in a project that will help shape Brighton and Hove's first "liveable neighbourhood'"

The project will create a neighbourhood "planned and designed to reduce motor traffic cutting through residential streets", also known as rat-running.

It could also help to open up streets for more community use, green space and active travel.

The council wants residents to get involved by giving ideas for how to improve the area.

Using a new website, created for the project, residents are able to show what they would like to see, identify problem areas and things that could be added or improved.

This could be anything from pointing out rat-running hotspots, to areas where they would like to see a pocket park or pavement improvements.

The council is also holding a series of outdoor events where residents can find out more about the project, share their views and give feedback.

The council states it will use this information to help develop plans before putting them out for formal consultation, most likely early in 2022.

Once in place, the trial scheme will be used to help inform the medium to longer-term strategy for delivery of liveable neighbourhoods across Brighton and Hove.

Elaine Hills, ward councillor for Hanover and Elm Grove and member of the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability committee said: “I’m very pleased that the official engagement process can now begin. We very much want the project to be community-led.

"I’ve been working closely with community groups and local people in Hanover and Tarner since June last year, trying to increase residents’ awareness of what the possibilities are within a liveable neighbourhood and giving them opportunities to share their ideas.

“Our first liveable neighbourhood is a chance to reduce rat running, provide more space for community use, improve accessibility and encourage active and sustainable travel.

“The website is going to give residents the chance to tell us exactly what they would like to see, identify those rat running hotspots and tell us what could be improved. I’d encourage all residents who live in the area to have their say.”

“We want the Hanover and Tarner Liveable Neighbourhood to be the first of many across the city and I can’t wait to see it happen.”
