THE NAME of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s child has moved into the top ten most popular baby names.

Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed the top boys and girls baby names in England and Wales in 2020.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s sons name Archie moved up in the boys’ list from 19th to ninth – the first time the name has featured in the top ten.

In 2019, there were 2,544 babies named Archie, rising to 2,944 in 2020.

Harry was the eighth most popular boys’ name, with 3,209 babies given that name, while Meghan dropped to 710th place in 2020, having been in 641st in 2019.

Oliver remained the most popular name for boys overall for the eighth year in a row, while Olivia topped the girls’ list for the fifth year in succession.

Sian Bradford, of ONS, highlighted the role of popular culture in parents’ inspiration for children’s names.

“Archie jumped into the top 10 boys’ names for the first time, driven by younger mothers as well as the obvious royal link,” he said.

“Popular culture continues to provide inspiration for baby names, whether it’s characters in our favourite show or trending celebrities.

“Maeve and Otis, characters from the popular programme Sex Education, have seen a surge in popularity in 2020, while the name Margot has been rapidly climbing since actress Margot Robbie appeared in the popular film The Wolf Of Wall Street.”
