A PROPERTY fit for a prince has gone on the market.

Dutton Hall makes up a large portion of Dutton Homestall, a Grade II country house on the edge of the village of Ashurst Wood, near East Grinstead, and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

This wing of the property is made up of a substantial Tudor manor house with seven bedrooms, two bathrooms and four reception rooms.

It also has countless original features, including wall and ceiling timbers, stone mullion windows, flagstone floors and carved stone fireplaces - with one inscribed: "This being made in the year of our Lord 1585."

The entrance door is understood to be close to 1,000 years old from a monastery in France and beyond it is a baronial hall open to full height, and an elegant dining room overlooking the gardens.

The price tag is £2.9 million and the property is available through Jackson-Stops, which is also selling another wing of the house, albeit smaller, for £2.2 million.

That wing, called The Homestall, has eight bedrooms, four bathrooms and five reception rooms, and also features a drawing room once described as the oldest sitting room in Sussex, a kitchen with granite work surfaces and a panelled study with a wood burning stove.

Both properties have communal access to a six hole golf course, two tennis courts, and a swimming pool.

Dutton Homestall has a rich history, with a dwelling existing on the site as far back as the 14th century, when English prince John of Gaunt, son of Edward III, is understood to have used it as his hunting lodge.

By 1830, a simple farmhouse was on the site and was restored in 1907 by Lord Dewar, who added a substantial service wing, remodelled the gardens and bough two farms to create a grand estate.

The house was inherited in 1930 by his nephew but when he married in 1932, his wife said the property was not big enough for lavish entertaining. He bought Dutton Hall in Cheshire, had it dismantled and rebuilt alongside The Homestall.

The house acted as an auxiliary hospital during the Second World War and even served as the Stoke Brunswick School up until 2009, with the headmaster living in The Homestall.
