WORK to fix a burst sewer pipe has continued overnight causing disruption to hundreds of people.

Southern Water technicians have been working since the early hours of Tuesday morning to prevent raw sewage flooding homes and gardens after a sewer burst in Orient Road, Lancing.

This morning, the water company said the repair work had not been as quick as planned and that crews had been unable to completely empty the mainline to allow work to be undertaken safely.

It said the main priority is to identify the source of the water still entering the main.

Nigel Sweet, who lives in The Broadway near the crossroads with Orient Road said work he “could not sleep” because of the noise outside his home.

He said: “The Broadway seems to be almost clear thanks to the large but nicely quite pump.

“Orient Road is no different, it is still flooded, but the site in the road where the sewage is emerging has been fenced off.

“That area is still being pumped into massive tankers.”

In a statement, Southern Water said: “Progress to repair the burst main at Orient Road overnight has not been a quick as we planned.

“Crews were unable to completely empty the main line to allow repair to be undertaken safely.

“We understand that this is causing disruption to residents and are working as quickly as possible to be away from the area.

“As we continue to use tankers in the area to maintain services, our priority now is to identify the source of the water still entering the main. We thank people for their ongoing patience.”

It also confirmed that customer representatives will also be onsite to support people in the area.

Traffic management measures remain in place on surrounding roads to allow tankers to continue working on the sewer main.

Photos taken yesterday showed several tankers lining the residential street, supporting the effort to repair the damaged main.
