A LORRY fire caused major disruptions on the A27 – closing the road in both directions.

The road near Hollingbury was closed for hours as a result of the blaze which began at 5.52pm Tuesday, October 26.

The HGV lorry was travelling eastbound towards Falmer, but the fire caused major delays and heavy congestions in both directions.

A video of the fire showed huge plumes of black smoke and large flames.

Cars can also be seen driving past the lorry on the A27.

Photos taken at the scene also showed the remains of the burnt-out vehicle.

The contents of the lorry is not known, but goods inside the HGV were exposed after the outer covering was completely burnt away.

According to the emergency services, there were no reported injuries.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and Sussex Police both attended the scene.

Police Constable Simon Dove, of the Sussex Police Road Policing Unit, said both lanes of the A27 were closed for a considerable period of time.

He also said there was “probable road damage” caused by the fire.

According to East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, as of 7.45pm, three fire engines and three officers were still in attendance at the scene.

A diesel spill also had to be cleared, which caused further delays and congestion.

Road users were encouraged to avoid the area by police until the area was cleared.

As of 10.15pm last night, lane one of the A27 westbound carriageway between Hollingbury and Falmer had reopened.

The other westbound lanes, as well as the eastbound carriageway, remained closed overnight while Highways Agencies worked to clean the road.
