A ZOO is getting its animals into the Halloween spirit - and is inviting families to join in on the fun.

Drusillas Park near Alfriston is hosting a series of spooky events for Halloween as part of its half-term Shriek Week.

Visitors will be able to enjoy a haunted house experience, a mysterious maze and live action shows.

Roger O’Leary, assistant operations manager at the park, said: “We’ve spent years getting the level of scary right for each of our visitors during Shriek Week, as there is no one size fits all experience.

“Children, regardless of their age, have varying levels of sensitivity to these sorts of things, and so we do everything we can to be mindful of that.

“Between our team, we have lots of secret signals we will give to each other to indicate whether the spooky elements need to be toned down or ramped up so the experience fits the individual.”

“For those that don’t fancy a live action thrill, the whole park has been draped in devilish décor, with pumpkins, skeletons and hay bales, so there are endless photo opportunities and we have seasonal face painting, tattoos, and delicious Halloween treats.”

The attraction is also inviting children to visit some of the creepy crawlies it keeps in the Discovery Centre educational hub.

Roger said the hub will be swarming with all manner of weird insects including cockroaches, millipedes, mealworms, locusts, and an Asian forest scorpion.

He said: “We take great care in planning events that are suitable for little ones, but still exciting for the rest of the family.

“Over the years we’ve perfected that family-friendly Halloween ambiance and invite visitors of all ages to enjoy a truly frightful visit.”

Drusillas is also encouraging visitors to take part in its Halloween fundraiser for the Wolo Foundation, which support families in Sussex affected by cancer.

Participants are asked to run or walk up a distance of up to 10km in at any time before October 31.

Anyone wishing to participate must make a donation of at least £10 to the charity.
