POLICE seized more than 30 weapons after receiving a tip off about a man handling a “suspected firearm” in a car park.

Armed police unit rushed to the scene and arrested a 53-year-old man and a 49-year-old woman on suspicion of possessing firearms.

The pair were reported to the the tactical firearms unit by someone who saw them outside a vehicle at a car park in Rowlands Road, Worthing.

Two deactivated pistols were found in the car just before 2pm on October 23, prompting officers to search a nearby address.

Sussex Police found 25 long-barrelled weapons, the majority of which were deactivated, and a further 10 handgun style weapons either gas powered or deactivated.

Officers made the weapons, some of which had not been properly deactivated, safe.

The 53-year-old man from Worthing was released on police bail, pending further enquiries.

While the 49-year-old woman from Worthing was released under investigation.

A deactivated weapon is any firearm that has been converted so that it can no longer discharge any shot, bullet or any other missile.
