AN HGV lorry carrying a houseboat caused significant traffic disruptions.

The A259, Wallsend Road, near Pevensey Bay was closed for all traffic for a number of hours on Wednesday due to the “abnormal load”.

Photos from the scene show police and other emergency workers guiding the lorry down the road.

Workers can be seen putting down cones and road closure signs.

In a statement released at 4.55pm on Wednesday, East Sussex Highways said: “We have just been informed that the A259, Wallsend Road, Pevensey Bay, will be shut from 5pm tonight for approximately 1-2 hours for an abnormal load movement.

“Apologies for any delays.”

Stagecoach South East were forced to change the route of some of their services as a result of the traffic disruption.

“Apologies for any inconvenience caused during the disruption which was out of our control,” a Stagecoach spokeswoman said.

“We have had confirmation that Pevensey Bay has reopened. All 99 services will be returning to normal route.”
