BRIGHTON and Hove is one of the top cities in the country in terms of access to electric vehicle chargers, new figures reveal.

In total, there are 316 connectors in the city, which means one charger for every 949 people in Brighton and Hove.

The council installed 208 charging points on lamp posts over the summer of 2020 after receiving £400,000 investment from the Office of Low Emission Vehicles, as well as operator, Electric Blue.

The charging points have been a success and were used over a thousand times in their first two months of activity.

The investment in charging points comes as the city aims to be carbon neutral by 2030.

Across the country, the city has the third most electric vehicle chargers per population, behind Milton Keynes and Coventry and above Nottingham and Sunderland.

Research from Boxt, an electric vehicle (EV) charger provider, detailed the towns and cities across the country that are the most and least accessible in terms of access to charging points.

Andy Kerr, the co-founder of Boxt, said: “A considerable rise in drivers switching from fuel cars to EVs is crucial for the UK to meet important carbon emission goals. However, many drivers still don’t feel confident that there will be enough resources to maintain an EV.”

“While EV charging connectors may not be a priority for many drivers at the moment, this will soon change when the options for new cars are drastically limited to low-emission vehicles.

“If people don’t feel able to make the transition to EVs in their area, due to a lack of resources, it could cause them to move somewhere new. Not providing enough EV charging points could even deter tourists from visiting.”

The best and worst towns and cities can be seen below.
