HUNDREDS of protesters took to the streets of Brighton to call for an end to "street harassment and rape culture".

Activists chanted "stop gender violence" and other slogans, with some carrying banners which read "don't blame the victim, blame the system", "no excuse 4 [sic] violent men", and "girls just want to have fun(damental) rights".

The march began in Brighthelm Gardens in Queen's Road in Brighton at 6pm yesterday evening, down West Street and along Kings Road, before ending at the Royal Pavilion.

The event was focused on the dangers women face when walking home alone at night and the issues of gender-based violence.

One banner also read "Sabina Nessa in our hearts", paying tribute to the primary school teacher who was killed on a walk to meet her friend in Greenwich.

In a statement, organisers of the march said: "Not only do we march against street harassment and sexual violence, reclaiming spaces that are traditionally off-limits to lone women, but we seek to fundraise for our local rape crisis centre, survivor's network and to create an atmosphere of belief and support for survivors."

Earlier this year, vigils were held in cities across the country in the memory of Sarah Everard, with protests held to highlight the measures that women are forced to take to try to keep themselves safe.
