A CHRISTMAS festival has been forced to cancel more shows as high winds are set to hit the South Coast.

Storm Barra is set to hit Sussex with wind speeds of up to 80mph later today (December 7).

Brighton Christmas Festival announced on Twitter that it will open from 6pm today, rather than 11am as normal "to ensure the safety of our visitors and staff".

Two shows of 'The Elves Save Christmas', due to take place at 11.30am and 4.30pm have been cancelled due to today's postponed opening.

Ticket holders are able to redeem tickets to another Elves show subject to availability, until its last show on December 24. Those affected are advised to attend the show of their choice with their original ticket, with no need to rebook.

People impacted by the cancellation can also request a full refund through hello@brightonchristmasfestival.com until December 10.

Sessions at Santa's Grotto have also been affected by the festival's postponed opening today, with guests told to rebook for another day or request a refund via bookings@greatgrottos.co.uk.

This marks the third time the festival has been forced to close, after being forced to shut due to Storm Arwen the day after its grand opening, as well as last week due to a power failure.

A yellow weather warning for wind has been issued by the Met Office for the South Coast, effective from 9am until 11.59pm.

The weather service warns that Storm Barra will bring "very windy conditions with severe coastal gales", with south to southeast winds gusting to 70-80mph at times across exposed coastal areas, with 50-60mph inland.

Train services are set to be disrupted by the windy weather, with Southern Rail advising commuters to allow more time for their journey as some trains will run at slower speeds for safety reasons.
