THE SANTA bus has been forced to cancel its journey tonight due to conditions caused by Storm Barra.

The fundraising open-top bus, which tours Brighton and Hove every year playing festive music, was set to visit streets in Saltdean this evening, however the stormy conditions means the trip has been cancelled.

A Brighton and Hove Buses spokeswoman said: “Due to the high winds and safety of everyone, despite our best efforts, sadly the Santa Bus will not be visiting the Saltdean area this evening.

“Santa sends his apologies and weather permitting, hopes to see you in the Patcham area tomorrow.”

Storm Barra has been felt across Sussex and the UK, with gusty winds battering the coast.

The Met Office warned that Barra would cause travel disruption across the country, with snow and heavy rain forecast.

Gusts of 70mph have already been recorded and yellow weather warnings remain in place across much of England.

Southern Rail warned that high winds will mean trains along certain routes will run at a much slower speed than usual for safety reasons.

Routes affected include services between Brighton and Hove and Littlehampton, and services between Brighton, Eastbourne and Hastings.

Earlier this evening, Brighton Christmas Market announced that it would not be reopening today because of high winds.

Organisers confirmed that the festival in Valley Gardens is set to reopen tomorrow.
