A MULTI vehicle crash caused by Storm Barra closed a section of the A23 overnight.

Officers from Sussex Police closed the A23 northbound and southbound between Pyecombe and Hickstead at around 1am this morning.

It is currently unclear how many cars were involved in the incident, but drivers were advised to find alternative routes while the scene was cleared.

Acting Sergeant Andrew Heath from Sussex Roads Police said: “The A23 currently closed between Pyecombe and Hickstead due to heavy hail which has caused multiple vehicles to crash.

“Please use the A273 while we clear the scene.”

The A23 northbound reopened at around 2am after National Highways Southeast secured electrics in a lamppost alongside the road.

The southbound carriageway reopened at around 3am.

Sussex Police have been approached for comment.
