COVID-19 booster jabs are in “extremely high demand” in Brighton and Hove.

More than four million visits were made nationwide to the NHS website following Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s announcement on Sunday.

Mr Johnson urged adults to “get boosted now”, promising that all over 18s could get their jabs by the end of the year.

This sparked queues of up to five hours at walk-in centres across the UK.

Within moments of the announcement, the NHS booking site crashed as it was overwhelmed by demand from millions of people.

The NHS Brighton and Hove Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) announced that the local operation is also in high demand.

“The Covid vaccine booking service is currently facing extremely high demand so is operating a queueing system,” a spokesman said.

“For users aged 18-29, please be aware that booking opens on Wednesday December 15.

“Please be patient - no one will miss out on their booster jab.”

It came as health chiefs estimated that current daily omicron infections have reached around 200,000 a day in the UK.

Meanwhile lateral flow tests ran out after it was announced that all close contacts of Covid cases will be required to undertake daily tests from Tuesday.

The rule applies to those who are double vaccinated, while those who are not are instructed to isolate for ten days.

By mid-morning on Monday, home deliveries of the tests were suspended as the Gov.uk website failed to keep up with record demand.

Earlier this month, walk-in Covid-19 vaccinations at the Churchill Square clinic were temporarily suspended.

The decision to suspend walk-ins at the Brighton vaccine centre from Wednesday, December 8, aims to free up 1,400 extra slots for appointments each week to book.

Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust chief executive Siobhan Melia said the decision is to support the national drive to deliver boosters quickly.

How to book a COVID-19 vaccination

The public can get their vaccine by booking online through the National Booking Service or by calling 119, with some GP practices also inviting those who are eligible to get in touch.

The online booking service is operating a queueing system.

The site states: “If you're unable to book now, please try again later today or tomorrow.”
